About Black Volta River (Wechiau stretch) river safari

The Wechiau stretch of the Black Volta River is the setting for a guided dugout-canoe river safari run as part of the Wechiau Community Hippo Sanctuary (WCHS), a community-led conservation and ecotourism project at Wechiau in Wa West District, Upper West Region, Ghana. The sanctuary protects a stretch of roughly 34–40 km of the Black Volta, the river that forms Ghana's western boundary with Burkina Faso, and it safeguards one of only two remaining hippopotamus populations in the country.

The safari itself is a boat experience: visitors are paddled in a traditional dugout canoe in search of hippos, with bird and reptile sightings along the way. The operator lists the event duration as approximately two hours, though the existing description notes this can vary depending on where the hippos are located. Sightings are described as best in the dry season, roughly November to June, and in the early morning or late afternoon. Birdlife is notable, with more than 200 species recorded, including Violet Turaco and Malachite Kingfisher, alongside Vervet monkeys, monitor lizards, crocodiles and baboons.

The sanctuary was created in 1998–1999 by local chiefs in response to declining hippo numbers from hunting, and is supported by the Calgary Zoo/Wilder Institute. It won the UNDP Equator Prize in 2008, and in 2009 it was used as a model for Ghana's Community Resource Management Area legislation.

Amenities are limited and basic. Sources describe two local-style tourist lodges, a Hippo Hide Tree House for overnight stays, a Welcome Office with local guides, hiking trails, and cultural tours such as Lobi compound visits, xylophone music and local pito. A basic guesthouse near the riverside, homestay options and camping at the Hippo Hide are also mentioned, and life vests were provided for the canoe trip. No source confirmed restaurants, shops or other facilities at the river safari site itself.

Practical details are only partly verified. The operator's tours listing prices the Hippo River Safari from GH₵40 per booking, with a one-hour duration listed, while the booking calendar page does not display a price; the listing does not state whether that figure is per person or per group. Third-party figures differ and are not confirmed by the operator. The operator lists the safari meeting location as Pisie, Ghana. Wechiau town is given as 9.833°N, 2.683°W, but that is a town centroid rather than the safari site, and no verified coordinates for the safari site itself were confirmed.
