About Polzen Waterfalls

Polzen Waterfalls is one of two waterfalls inside Mole National Park, in Ghana's Savannah Region. The park's official site describes it as "of exceptional natural beauty", with its source on the Konkori escarpment. It is the companion fall to Kparia Waterfalls, and the Forestry Commission notes that waterfalls are a rare and unique sight in northern Ghana, with Mole privileged to hold both.

The falls flow throughout the year and sit within thick evergreen forest that forms a dense canopy. They serve as one of the major water sources for the park's wildlife, and the breeze at the base produces a distinctly cold temperature condition there. The water seeps gently into layers of rock and resurfaces about 500 metres away, where it joins the Polzen River — one of the rivers rising within or draining through the park and emptying into the White Volta.

Reaching Polzen is a serious undertaking rather than a short stop. The park states that both Polzen and Kparia falls are each about five hours' drive from the Information Centre, and describes access as remote and difficult. Trips are arranged through the park, with fees paid at the Information Centre, departure at 6:00am and a briefing before setting out. A two-day duration is listed for the Kparia waterfalls tour; no Polzen-specific duration is published.

No amenities are documented at the falls themselves. The park's waterfalls page lists what visitors must bring: a 4x4 vehicle or motorbike, closed footwear, protective wear, water, food, a tent or mosquito net, insect repellent, warm bedding and clothing, bright torchlight, and a camping mat or mattress. Park-level facilities — a 90-bed motel with restaurant, bar and swimming pool, viewing hides and platforms, camping, car rental, guides and conference facilities — are at Mole headquarters, not at the falls.

There is no fixed published fee for the Polzen trip. The park states that fees for the waterfalls tours vary according to the number of visitors and number of days, and are determined at the Information Centre. No opening hours are published for the falls themselves. Mole National Park can be contacted at Post Office Box 8, Damongo; email [email protected]; telephone +233 (0)24 435 8371. The park is accessible by road, and has an airstrip that is out of use.
