About Our Lady of Calvary Grotto, Asueyi
Our Lady of Calvary Grotto at Asueyi is a Catholic pilgrimage and retreat grotto of the Diocese of Techiman, built on rock formations in the Techiman Municipal District of the Bono East Region. It is listed among the grottos of the diocese and is titled on the diocesan page as "Our Lady of Calvary Grotto – Asueyi."
The site's origins lie in a visit: Op. Matthew Kwadwo Okrah, then church president of Asueyi Catholic Church, conceived the idea after attending the 1966 annual diocesan pilgrimage at Buoho in the Ashanti Region under Bishop Bronk of Kumasi. In 1970 Fr. Huismann, SMA, Op. Okrah and Asueyi church executives requested the land from the Jama Traditional Council and began developing it by manual labour, constructing an altar at what is now the Marian Shrine. Work paused after Fr. Huismann's transfer and resumed in November 1984, when Fr. Otmar Auwinger, SVD, built Stations of the Cross on the mountain tops and named the place "Holy Cross of Calvary Grotto."
The first parish pilgrimage was held on 14 September 1984, the feast of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross. Artisan George Anane of Berekum built the cement Stations of the Cross in 1989. The Diocese of Sunyani adopted the site as a diocesan shrine and pilgrimage centre, renaming it "Our Lady of the Holy Cross of Calvary Grotto"; the first diocesan pilgrimage took place on the Feast of the Assumption, 15 August 1987. Rectors have followed in succession: Fr. Charles Gyasi Boateng became the first in 1991, Fr. William Kyere in January 2006, Fr. John Kofi Brobbey after the Diocese of Techiman was created in December 2007, and Fr. Peter Kwame Yeboah in 2013. The Apostolic Nuncio to Ghana, Most Rev. Leon B. Kalenga, visited in 2012 during the grotto's Silver Jubilee.
For a visitor, the grotto is a place of prayer and retreat rather than a conventional attraction. A community video description notes that it is built on uniquely shaped rocks and spans a large area of land, serving as prayer grounds for many Catholics and as a retreat centre in the Bono East Region. Modern Ghana lists it among four popular tourist sites in Techiman.
Practical details are limited. Neither the diocese nor Modern Ghana publishes a street address or coordinates, and no opening hours, entry fees, guided-tour arrangements or accessibility information appear in the available sources. Visitors should treat pilgrimage dates and any access arrangements as things to confirm with the Diocese of Techiman before travelling.
