About Dzodze Ewe Heritage and Cultural Area
Dzodze is a small town and the administrative capital of Ketu North Municipal District, in the south-eastern corner of Ghana's Volta Region, close to the border with Togo. It is an Anlo-Ewe community where residents speak Ewe (Eʋe) and English, and the area's traditional rhythms are Agbadza and Ageshe. The town's name is explained in local history through the Ewe words "Dzo" (to fly) and "Dze" (to land) — "flew and landed" — linked to Torgbui Ashite crossing the Aka river and settling in the forest.
For a visitor, Dzodze is best understood as a living town and traditional area rather than a gated, ticketed attraction. There is no single entrance, opening time or set programme to plan around; what the place offers is everyday Anlo-Ewe town life and the cultural heritage of the wider municipality.
Palm is central to the local economy and identity. Cultivation here is processed into palm oil, palm wine and Akpteteshie, a local gin. The annual Deza (Palm) Festival commemorates the bringing of palm trees to the area; one reported edition ran from 25 September to 3 October, though dates vary by year and should be confirmed locally before travelling.
The Ketu North Municipal Assembly's Information Officer has pointed to the municipality's ethnic and cultural heritage tourism potential, alongside religious, eco and environmental tourism. Attractions cited within the municipality include the Roman Catholic Church Grotto at Dzodze-Deme, the 14-headed palm tree at Kasu, and the Sacred Forest at Afife — note that these lie at different settlements, not all in Dzodze itself.
On setting and access, Dzodze sits at roughly 6°14'N 0°59'E, at an elevation of about 64 metres. The municipal assembly describes it as about 80 km south of Ho, the regional capital; another source gives 87 km from Ho and 199 km from Accra via Tokor. These are town-centre figures rather than a visitor entrance, and the two distances to Ho differ slightly between sources.
