About Dzemeni Fish Market

Dzemeni Fish Market is the market of Dzemeni, also written Tongor Dzemeni, a fishing community on a peninsula jutting into the Volta Lake in the South Dayi District of Ghana's Volta Region. The Volta Lake forms the district's western boundary, and the market sits on its eastern edge. The South Dayi District Assembly describes a lively, thriving market here, and Ghana's Ministry of Food and Agriculture (MOFA) calls Dzemeni "an important market which thrives on the fishing industry," noting that the community "has a comparative advantage in fishing given the existence of the Volta Lake."

Fish is the reason the market exists. Graphic Online lists Dzemeni and Kpando Torkor among the country's huge fish markets, where traders sell fish fresh, smoked, dried and fried, caught mostly from the Volta Lake. MOFA recorded 157,672 kg of fresh fish landed at Dzemeni in 2009, an average of 13,139 kg a month, with tilapia and Chrysichthys dominant. A peer-reviewed study by Amu-Mensah and colleagues describes Dzemeni and Kpando-Torkor as major landing sites and markets that serve a large part of Ghana with freshwater and processed fish.

The market is not only about fish. MOFA records a thriving livestock market for sheep, goats, pigs and cattle, and names Dzemeni and Kpeve as the district's major grain supply sources. GhanaDistricts notes that the lake-side market attracts traders and goods from across the country, particularly fish, charcoal and cattle brought across the lake from the Afram Plains. GBC News reported that close to 140 boats and canoes, mainly carrying goods from the Afram Plains, use the Dzemeni market shore weekly.

Physically, the market combines open fish stalls along the lake with covered stalls. Traders prefer the open area for its closeness to the lake and to boat and ferry passengers. Visitors should expect a working market rather than a developed tourism site: GhanaDistricts states that physical infrastructure is inadequate for the level of activity and that the market requires investment in facilities, while GBC News reported that boat operators and fishermen lack life jackets, a landing site and storage facilities, and that sanitary conditions at the shore are not encouraging.

MOFA records that Dzemeni market comes every five days, alongside Peki; the MOFEP South Dayi composite budget lists Dzemeni among the district's three major markets. A third-party listing suggests Wednesdays and Thursdays, which conflicts with the five-day cycle and should be treated as unverified. No verified coordinates, opening hours, fees or transport details were obtained, so plan around the market cycle rather than fixed daily hours.
