About Centre of Ghana Monument

The Centre of Ghana is a small monument in Kintampo, the capital of the Kintampo North Municipality in the Bono East Region. It marks the point that was identified as the geographical centre of Ghana as measured in colonial times. The exact spot is marked by a monument bearing Ghana's Coat of Arms, with the national flag hoisted on it, and the structure is decorated in the colours of the national flag.

The monument stands in the heart of Kintampo town, next to the old police station and about 100 metres from the Techiman–Tamale Highway. The old police station lies just north of the monument. For visitors arriving in the central business district, the approach is to take the first paved road to the left, passing the Okumah Executive Lodge; the monument then appears on the left after roughly 300 metres.

Its interest for a traveller is largely conceptual: this is a marker of a national measurement rather than a large built attraction, and it sits within an ordinary working town rather than a developed visitor site. A structure was constructed by a vulcaniser in 1992 to demarcate the place, and the wall erected around the exact point was painted in the national colours with the Coat of Arms mounted in the middle.

As of 2022 reporting, that structure had deteriorated from lack of maintenance, the site looked bushy and unkempt, and there was no tour guide. The Bono East Regional Director of the Ghana Tourism Authority described it as not befitting the status of the Centre of Ghana, while the Kintampo North Municipal Assembly said it had included the site in its long-term development plan and was seeking investors. Visitors should therefore plan around a modest roadside landmark rather than a managed attraction, and should expect conditions on the ground to reflect whatever maintenance has or has not taken place since that reporting.
