About Cape St. Paul Lighthouse
Cape St. Paul Lighthouse stands on the beach at Woe, a small rural fishing town near Keta in the Volta Region of Ghana. It is a red-and-white structure built in 1901 and restored in 2017, and it is described as being built entirely of metal, with a skeletal pyramidal base and an octagonal frame that narrows towards the top. The upper third is enclosed and houses the lantern and gallery.
Its setting is distinctive. Woe sits on a narrow spit of land with the Keta Lagoon to the north and the Atlantic Ocean to the south, close to Keta and not far from the Togo border. The lighthouse stands on the beach just off Keta Municipality's main road, which makes it relatively straightforward to reach by road as part of a trip through the Keta area.
The tower was built to guide ships away from an area off the Woe shore where vessels could run aground — described in local accounts as a "big submerged mountain". It is reported to be still functioning, directing ships at night. Sources also describe it as believed to be the oldest lighthouse in Ghana, and as one of only two lighthouses of its type in the world, with the other cited as the Alpena Lighthouse in the United States, built in 1904. These claims are widely repeated rather than independently verified here.
For a visitor, the appeal is largely architectural and historical: a metal lighthouse of an unusual skeletal design, on a working stretch of coast between lagoon and ocean. Climbing to the top is reported to give views over Keta's sandy beaches and Woe's farmland. Practical details such as opening hours, entry fees, guided access and whether the tower can be climbed on any given day are not established in the available sources, so visitors should treat these as unknown and confirm locally before travelling.
