About Ahwiaa Wood Carving Village
Ahwiaa is a town in the Kwabre East District of the Ashanti Region of Ghana, recognised as the traditional centre for Asante wood carving. It sits within the Kwabre East Municipality, roughly nine kilometres from Kumasi along the Kumasi–Mampong Highway (N10), which makes it one of the craft settlements closest to the city.
The town's reputation rests on its carving workshops. Documented products include stools, drums, traditional masks, linguist staffs, fertility dolls (akuaba), oware boards, totemic animals, furniture, palanquins, flower-pots and decorative carvings, with themes drawn from the indigenous knowledge and cultural values of the Asante people. Carvers are recorded as working with woods such as sese, mahogany, tweneboah and teak, and the community has an Ahwiaa Wood Carvers Association.
For a visitor, the site functions as a craft centre: a place to watch carvers at work and to buy Asante wooden crafts. The Ghana Tourism Authority has partnered with Ahwiaa in developing its product, which is the clearest official signal that the town is treated as a visitor-facing craft destination rather than only a production centre.
The documented history of carving here is not settled. One account credits its introduction in the 18th century to Akwasi Yoyo, after the Asante defeat of Ntim Gyakari, King of Denkyira, in 1701; another credits Akwasi Korankye of Bonwire. Oral narratives suggest utilitarian carving predates the 18th century. Visitors may encounter more than one version of the story locally.
Practical details are limited in the available record. The coordinates held for Ahwiaa are town-level and do not mark a confirmed visitor entrance, and no verified opening hours, entry fees, guided-tour arrangements or workshop addresses are documented here. Travellers should treat the town as the destination and confirm current arrangements locally or through the Ghana Tourism Authority before setting out.
