Western North Region rewards travellers who look beyond Ghana's better-known coast and savannah. All three places on this page sit around Sefwi Wiawso, which makes them easy to enjoy together: forest, market and palace within reach of one another. Bia National Park, the 77.7 km2 northern half of the Bia Conservation Area, is the wild one, a forest reserve known for primates, forest elephants and guided walks. Dwenase Market, also called Sefwi-Wiawso Market, is the everyday one, the main market of the Sefwi Wiawso conurbation, trading in produce, foodstuffs, clothing and household goods from Sefwi-Dwenase. The Sefwi-Wiawso Traditional Palace and Council Grounds is the ceremonial one, the administrative and ceremonial seat of the Omanhene of the Sefwi-Wiawso Traditional Area, and a place tied to festival life. So the region offers you three different rhythms in one trip: quiet forest trails, the noise and colour of a working market, and the dignity of a living heritage site.

Good to know

Before you go

Base yourself in Sefwi Wiawso, since all three places are in or near the town, and plan your days around daylight rather than trying to rush between them. For Bia National Park, arrange guided walks in advance and ask locally about current access and conditions before you set out, as forest reserves can be affected by weather and seasonal closures. At Dwenase Market, go in the morning when trading is busiest, carry small notes and ask before photographing people. If you hope to visit the palace and council grounds, check ahead whether a festival or ceremony is taking place, and dress respectfully. Confirm opening arrangements and transport locally, as information changes.
