Things to do in New Tafo

New Tafo, in Ghana's Eastern Region, is a town where cocoa and tradition sit side by side. Three places here tell that story, and all of them are rooted in the same stretch of Akyem country: the Cocoa Research Institute of Ghana (CRIG), the CRIG Golf Club on its grounds, and Awansa Palace in nearby Akyem Old Tafo.

They differ in what they ask of you. CRIG is a working research institute and Ghana's principal centre for cocoa study, offering guided tours of experimental cocoa farms and arboretums by prior appointment. The CRIG Golf Club, also known as Tafo Golf Club, is a nine-hole course established in 1947 on the institute's grounds, and it is the easiest of the three to enjoy on a whim. Awansa Palace is the traditional palace of the Omanhene of Akyem Tafo and a working seat of traditional authority, so a visit there is about respect and timing as much as sightseeing.

Together they make a gentle half-day or full day out: cocoa science, a round of golf, and a living royal court within a short reach of one another.

Good to know

Before you go

Plan around CRIG first, since its guided tours of the experimental cocoa farms and arboretums are by prior appointment only, and arrange your visit before you travel. The golf club sits on the same institute grounds, so it pairs naturally with a CRIG tour. Awansa Palace in Akyem Old Tafo is a working seat of traditional authority, so check locally before you go and dress and behave respectfully on arrival. Ask your hotel or host about the current best way to move between New Tafo and Akyem Old Tafo, and confirm opening arrangements for each place directly, as these can change.
