Navrongo, the capital of the Kassena-Nankana Municipal District in Ghana's Upper East Region, is a town where living tradition and quiet history sit side by side. Its places of interest share a common thread: they are rooted in community life, whether that means faith, chieftaincy or the everyday rhythm of trade. They differ in mood and purpose, so a day here can move gently from prayer to market bargaining.
The Navrongo Minor Basilica is the town's best-known landmark, a mud-brick Roman Catholic cathedral listed by the Ghana Museums and Monuments Board as the last of its kind in Ghana. Beside it, the Navrongo Basilica Museum, also known as the Old Navrongo Catholic Cathedral Museum, tells the story of this mud-brick national monument through its collections. A short step away, Our Lady of Lourdes Grotto offers a stone shrine with an altar and a statue of the Madonna, built by Father Robert in 1933–34 at the White Fathers' Mission.
For a change of pace, Navrongo Central Market is the town's main trading hub, running on a three-day market cycle, and the Navrongo Palace, the working seat of the Navro-Pio, Paramount Chief of the Navrongo Traditional Area, remains a ceremonial heart of the town.
Good to know
Plan your visit around the market's three-day cycle if you want to see Navrongo Central Market at its liveliest, and remember that the palace is a working traditional seat, so behave respectfully and ask before photographing people or ceremonies. The basilica, museum and grotto sit close together at the old mission, which makes them easy to combine on foot, while the market and palace are best reached by taxi or a short walk through town. Before setting out, check current opening arrangements for the museum and basilica, and whether any events are taking place at the palace, as these can change access. Light, modest clothing suits both religious sites and the heat.
