About Kpembe Wura's Palace

Kpembe Wura's Palace, also written Kpembewura Palace, is the traditional palace of the Kpembewura, the Paramount Chief of the Kpembe Traditional Area and President of the Kpembe Traditional Council. It stands in Kpembe, a village in East Gonja Municipal District in Ghana's Savannah Region, roughly 3.5 km southeast of Salaga, the municipal capital. The Kpembe traditional area is described as a division of the Gonja kingdom, and Salaga was a well-known market town in precolonial times.

The palace is a working seat of traditional governance rather than a managed visitor attraction. It serves as the chief's residence and as the venue for customary gatherings: reporting on the Kpembe traditional area refers to the "usual Monday and Friday customary visits to Kpembewura's Palace," and to a press conference "held at the palace of the Kpembewura." An archival interview with Kpembiwura Alhaji Ibrahim Haruna, Paramount Chief of Kpembe, was recorded inside the palace on 4 July 2004, confirming its role as the chief's seat and a customary meeting place. A video titled "Salaga-Dagomba Chief enskinment | Kpembe wura's palace" indicates the palace also hosts enskinment, the installation of a chief.

For a visitor, the significance lies in that living function: this is where Kpembe chieftaincy business is conducted, and where the Kpembewura receives customary visits and hosts events. It is not a site with a visitor programme, guided tours, or ticketing, and no official tourism operator page was found. Anyone considering a visit should treat it as an active traditional institution and expect access to depend on the chief's household and on the occasion.

Practical planning facts are limited. No verified street address, opening hours, entry fee, or visitor facilities were established, and precise coordinates for the palace itself remain unconfirmed. Kpembe's position about 3.5 km southeast of Salaga is the reliable geographic anchor. Note also that Google lists "North East Gonja" as the local administrative area, while independent sources place Kpembe in East Gonja Municipal, whose capital is Salaga; North East Gonja District's capital is Kpalbe, a different town. The district question is therefore best treated as disputed, with East Gonja Municipal the better-supported reading.
