About Grave of King Tanjia
The Grave of King Tanjia (Tanjia Musa) is a heritage site in Gwollu, the administrative capital of Sissala West District in Ghana's Upper West Region. The Sissala West District Assembly lists the grave among the district's tourist sites, describing Tanjia as the king who facilitated construction of the defence wall. The same listing appears in the district's 2026–2029 Draft Composite Budget, so the site is reconfirmed across two budget cycles rather than recorded once.
Tanjia Musa is presented in media coverage as a Sissala leader of the 18th–19th centuries who mobilised chiefs, elders, warriors, women and families to defend Gwollu against slave raiders. The Gwollu Defensive Wall was built as a communal response to repeated slave incursions, blocking routes used by raiders. The Ghana News Agency reports the wall was built of mud with herbs and had holes where locals hid and aimed bows and arrows. The grave is listed alongside the wall, the tomb of the late President Dr Hilla Limann, the Traditional Bone Setting Centre, the impotency clinic, shrines used during the slave trade war, and crocodile ponds.
For a visitor, the grave's interest lies in that connection: it is one element of a wider cluster of sites in and around Gwollu associated with the slave-trade era and its commemoration. The late Kuoro Kuri-Buktie Limann IV, Paramount Chief of Gwollu, founded the Tanjia Musa Fire Festival in his memory. Held annually in Gwollu, it includes music, traditional performance, film, storytelling, lectures and guided heritage tours of the Gwollu Defensive Wall and surrounding historical sites. Those guided tours are the clearest documented way to encounter the area's heritage.
Practical information is limited. No published opening hours, entrance fee, contact details or accessibility information for the grave were found, and the district budget states that tourism infrastructure and services in the district remain undeveloped. Visitors should therefore treat arrangements as unconfirmed and plan around the festival period if guided interpretation matters to them.
Gwollu lies on the Tumu–Hamile road near the Burkina Faso border, in the northern part of the Upper West Region. No precise coordinates for the grave itself were located, so its exact position within the town should be confirmed locally on arrival.
