About Anfoega Traditional Area

The Anfoega Traditional Area is a traditional area in the North Dayi District of Ghana's Volta Region, with its seat at Anfoega, which also serves as the district capital. It is recorded as a cultural and heritage site, and its significance for visitors lies less in built attractions than in the institutions, language and customs of a living chieftaincy area.

The National Commission on Culture records the paramount chief as Togbe Tepre Hodo IV, who is also President of the Volta Regional House of Chiefs. According to the Commission, the people of Anfoega migrated from Sudan to Notsie in Benin, settled first at Anfoeta, and finally settled at Anfoega in the Volta Region. They speak Vedome. The Commission notes that the community is known for education, farming, trading and management, and that its favourite food is fufu prepared with cassava, plantain and detsi.

Cultural life is documented in specific terms: the area celebrates Ete Za, the Yam Festival, and its cultural dance is Borborbor. Games recorded by the Commission include adi dada, akpo didi and ati didi. The Commission lists the area's tourist sites as white clay hills and the Agatayigbe steps.

The setting is rural and agrarian. The district assembly describes North Dayi as rural and agrarian, with the major hills around Anfoega, Awate, Botoku and Wusuta, and kaolin deposits at Anfoega Agatanyigbe and Anfoega Bume. The white clay hills and the kaolin deposits are related features of the same landscape.

Practical planning is limited by what is documented. The feature coordinates for Anfoega are approximately 6.88639, 0.277278, but these are settlement coordinates rather than a visitor entrance, and no opening hours, fees or site-specific access arrangements are recorded. No dedicated contact for the traditional area itself was found; the North Dayi District Assembly, whose office is in Anfoega, publishes P.O. Box AFG 37, Anfoega, Volta Region, and phone +233 24 302 2134. Visitors should treat festival timing, site access and any protocol around the traditional area as unconfirmed and enquire locally before travelling.
