About Akim Oda Market

Akim Oda Market, also known as the Kotoku Market Complex, is the central market of Akim Oda in the Birim Central Municipal District of Ghana's Eastern Region. Akim Oda is both the administrative centre of the municipality and the traditional capital of the Akyem Kotoku Traditional Council, which gives the market a civic as well as a commercial role in the town.

The market is the largest of the municipality's markets. Ghana's Ministry of Food and Agriculture district profile records it as covering about 1.3 hectares, with an area of influence reaching into the Eastern, Brong Ahafo, Ashanti and Greater Accra Regions. Its trade is built on agricultural and industrial produce, and the main food items recorded are cereals, roots and tubers, plantain, oil palm, fish and meat. Market days are Mondays and Thursdays, which is the most useful fact for planning a visit.

The present complex is new. The old market structure was destroyed by fire in September 2021, a blaze that destroyed hundreds of stalls and displaced traders. The rebuilt ultra-modern complex was constructed under the District Assemblies Common Fund as part of the USD 100 million Ghana Secondary Cities Support Programme, a World Bank-backed initiative covering 25 municipalities. It was inaugurated on 27 November 2024 by President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo together with the Omanhene of Akyem Kotoku.

News coverage of the new complex reports more than 250 lockable stores, a clinic, a banking hall and a creche. Other on-site amenities are not documented in the sources read.

Practical details are limited. Entrance fees, opening hours, contact details, accessibility and amenities beyond those reported in news coverage are not documented in the sources consulted, and no verified coordinates were available. Visitors should treat the market days and the general character of the trade as the reliable planning information, and confirm anything else locally.
