About Nchiraa Waterfalls

Nchiraa Waterfalls is a waterfall in the Nchiraa community of Wenchi Municipal, Bono Region, Ghana, roughly 30 kilometres north of Wenchi town. It sits wedged between the mountains of the Nchiraa settlement, and the water falls at the bottom of a valley reached on foot. The Bono Regional Coordinating Council lists it among the region's prominent tourist attractions, and the Ghana Tourism Authority records the community under both spellings, Nchiraa and Nkyeraa.

Reaching the falls means hiking a rocky, steep and challenging footpath that descends to the valley floor. The site lies about two kilometres into the forest, and the regional council describes road access as poor. There are no developed visitor facilities, and the falls are listed as underdeveloped. A community attempt to build walkways in 2019 was abandoned, and weeds have since taken over the site.

Local history holds that a hunter, Kofi Asiama, discovered the falls in the early 2000s. In 2004 he led a management committee to the site, and in 2011 World Tourism Day was celebrated there. Farming and other human activity upstream have reduced water levels and the falls' natural flow, so the volume of water is not constant.

Visitors are mainly students and researchers. Within about 10 kilometres are the Wurobo Ancestral Caves, believed to be the original dwelling place of the Nchiraa people, and the regional council notes other natural and cultural sites within a similar radius.

The Nchiraa Chief, Nana Tabiri III, is listed by the Bono Regional Coordinating Council as the contact for the falls. No official operator phone line, email address, website, opening hours or entry fee for the site was found in the available sources, so those details should be confirmed locally before travelling.
